Barcelona Discovering

Barcelona's prime position in the centre of the Catalonian coastline allows easy access to any destination within the region and across Spain. Catalonia has an abundance of splendid coastal resorts and inland villages that are situated in a diverse range of landscapes including, fine sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, rich pine forests and impressive mountainous regions.

Gràcia is almost a suburb of Barcelona and it offers city dwellers a convenient coastal retreat with world class facilities at Placa del Sol. To the north of Gràcia is one of the regions most popular and unusual attractions, Parc Guell. The park was designed by Antonio Gaudi and contains a colourful display of architecture, design, natural formations and a superb museum that beautifully illustrate the artist's unusual styles. The Dalí Museum, in the charming old town of Figueres, also attracts a huge number of visitors from Barcelona. This highly recommended museum is an outstanding record of the life and works of Salvador Dalí.

South of Barcelona lay the delightful coastal resorts of Costa del Garaf and Costa Dorada. The style of the area is illustrated in Sitges by the winding streets and old buildings that sit easily beside wide sandy beaches. Tarragona, further south, offers visitors access to a range of impressive Roman remains, which include an amphitheatre, the city's impressive walls, the splendid Roman tower that is home to the Roman Museum and the renowned National Archaeological Museum.

A little further north along the coast from Barcelona is Maresme and the popular Costa Brava, both offering a multitude of gorgeous resorts that focus on the tourist industry. The north coast of the Costa Brava meets with the eastern Pyrenees creating one of the most beautiful and dramatic landscapes in Spain.

The region at the foot of the Pyrenees is known as the Àger valley and it is famous for picturesque villages that are filled with Catalonian heritage, a fine example of which is Lleida. The eastern Pyrenees offers visitors to Barcelona a complete alternative to the beaches all along the Mediterranean coast. There are a number of breathtaking mountain villages and cliff-face monuments across the Pyrenees, which attract millions of visitors each year and most notable are the 11th century Montserrat Monastery, the massive basilica of the Temple del Sagrat Cor and the pilgrimage site of La Moreneta (Black Virgin).
